After you build the tower you then let the different cell companies know
you have tower space for lease. I work for a PCS company(sprint just baught
us). If your coverage is bad enough the city can go to the main carrier and
ask them also but if done this way don't expect much$$$ from the lease. If
you have the money build a ROHN mono pole that can handle several carriers.
Watch out for how they do the back haul. In remote areas where T1's are
expensive we do microwave hops, geuss what band, 2.4 Ghz ism. If you need
more info you can email me direct.

Subject: [smartBridges] Cell phone tower - redeux

I posted a question about this to the isp-wireless list last night, but
it never showed up, maybe someone here can answer. The text of the
original post:

I was surprised today to be approached by a local businessman who wants
me to look into putting up a cell phone tower in our community. When I
said I don't even know how to go about getting the telephone company to
let us on the network, he said they pretty much have to.

He definitely has the clout to get things accomplished and we do need
the tower, but I don't know if this is even a feasable thing to do. The
phone companies in this area pretty much ignore us, there's almost no
signal at all anywhere in town. How do I go about finding out more, or
is this the proverbial ant with a <snip> crawling up the elephant's hind
leg?

By the way, one tower site I've been drooling over for my WISP - I think
would be a good place to put a cell phone tower, and I just got the
folks who own it to agree in principal to let me put a tower up there.
