Any good?
Lewis,
This has been rolling around in the back of my
head all day. I did some checking with my XP machine and had some
thoughts as well. I may be all wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time
I was, but I don't think I'm too far off.
I stuffed an AirCarte into my
XP Pro machine here at EC and had a no association problem until I turned the
ESSID broadcast back on in the APP (Had to be able to find the AP before I
could associate with it!). It seems to be fine, now. Now that it
is associated, I was able to go back in and shut the ESSID broadcast off.
Still seems fine. I re-booted so it would have to look for it
again and it found it just fine. My laptop came with XP on it.
It
has been my experience that laptops in particular seem to behave better with
the OS that was originally installed on them at the factory. Drivers and
often hardware items are optimized for the original OS and upgrading the OS
many times does not provide drivers that work the way they are supposed to
with either the OS or the hardware. Setup for XP may not have touched
all or possibly any of the hardware drivers necessary to allow the card to
function properly. So, I would check for updated drivers for your
laptop's PCMCIA hardware, PCI bridge, or other bus related hardware. A
BIOS upgrade may be in order as well.
While the two OS's
are similar, they are different and will interact with the laptop's hardware
differently do not believe it is an issue with Smartbridges hardware or
software. I think it is with the interaction of your laptop with XP when
your laptop originally had Win 2K on it and was optimized for Win
2K..
Like I said, I may be all wet, but this follows my past
experiences with trying to up grade the OS on a laptop and even some desktops.

XP Professional. I tried each suggestion as before up to even formatting
and reinstalling Windows XP. Same exact problem. It associates for a
minute or so and then loses association. It worked fine for months with
Windows 2k Pro.

What is the issue with using airCarte on WinXP? The airCarte can work on
WinXP or any other Windows platform without any issue. On WInXP, you can
use our airMonitor utility or Windows Wireless Zero Configuration tool
to configure it.
Is the WinXP Pro or Home edition?

MessageIs the AirCarte any good or are there better PCMCIA cards on
the
market? If so, would you recommend one with can use an external
antenna?
I had great use of this card with Windows 2000 Pro. I upgraded to
Windows
XP and cannot get the card to work, even after trying all suggestions
from
this list. Some people say it's a Microsoft issue and I don't doubt it,
however, Microsoft is not going to change anything to make it work so I
highly suggest that sB do something to make the card useful with
Window's
XP. I do not have ESSID broadcasted from the AP so perhaps that's where
the trouble comes in since other people have no problem with it in XP...
I
dunno.
