sorry, i have a GPS with built-in electronic compass and electronic altimeter. I just assumed that those features would be standard in all GPS's these days..

The GPS doesn't have a compass. That's the point of this (what has become) silly discussion. A typical modern day GPS unit (whether it is a stand alone, or just a receiver hooked up to a computer with software) can take a position that you have marked, and calculate the distance and bearing to it from where you currently are. You don't need a compass for that, you just need to know the coordinates of the two points. With that information you use a compass to point you in the direction of that bearing. Whether that compass is a separate handheld type, or built into the GPS.
