I think that is the intention for the Nexus line. Or at least to allow
extension of the provided tools.

If I am interpreting the initial question correctly, the suggestion was
to allow those of us using the gear the most to do the development
of the tools. This would free up resources at SB for other things and
save them money. So it would/could effectively reduce costs and
speed their time to market.

I don't think this is necessarily true, many of the consumer grade AP's run
derivitives - and they offer some incredibly rich feature sets for a prices
that can be well below $100 - the linksys WRT54 being a perfect example.
Bandwidth shaping at the CPE end tho, would be a dream come true - that and
something affordable operating in the 5.8 Ghz range - compatible with
alvarion BreezeAccess VL base stations :)
