Sorry you've been having some trouble, I've got a couple follow up
questions and comments.

What exactly is that message? Is it by chance referring to an actual USB
device as opposed to the virtual one?

This seems like a bug. It's not clear exactly what's causing it to
happen. Is there a brief panic or something of that nature occurring?
The way that setup works is that we initially will write out the
configuration and create a zpool and then reboot to continue that set up.

What exactly is the timeout message that you're seeing?
