OK, it was a bit of a pain, but I went through the following:

1- Create a vdi disk
2- Boot a Linux liveCD
3- Repartition the disk into 3 partitions.
4- Make ext2 filesystems on the first 2 partitions
5- Mount the filesystems and create a few files (sample data)
6- Shut down the VM
7- detach the vdi from the linux VM, attach to one with smartos iso
8- boot smartos VM (from ISO)
9- configure network, etc., then choose 'manual' for zpool configuration
10- exit shell, get to confirmation screen, select 'y'
11- immediately, I get the message "skipping zpool 'zones' creation,
already exists" (or a reasonable facscimile thereof)
12- shut down smartos, detach disk, attach to Linux, boot Liux
13- mount first 2 partitions, check that they still exist as ext2, mountable

So it looks like it does the right thing. But, yes, the clear "we will wipe
these disks/partitions ____ " would be better.
