This is a PB 17" -- PB 17" 1.67 GHz 512 MB W852601tRJ3. It won't start up: because I came in late to the proceedings, I didn't actually see what happened.
what happens when you try to start it from an external FW disk is that it shows the screen that usually then reveals all the disk available as start-up but you see the watch cursor indefinitely. When you start it in Target Disk Mode, it looks ok but doesn't show up anywhere in the machine you plug it into. I'm accustomed in the case of a faulty disk for it be possible to start up the machine using an external disk so it seems to me that it is something else. The catch is that they (of course) haven't backed up for ages. Not in fact since they had a kid so the disk is crammed full of pictures they want. Is this a machine it's easy to retrieve the disk from and put into an external caddy? The screen also shows two thin but clear vertical lines at apparently random places. They rang up Apple who said it would cost 300 quid to repair at first glance. But they thought it was the screen, apparently. So -- does this sound characteristic of (eg) logic board failure? Do people agree that I should try to get the disk out even at the expense of the machine? The trackpad is also very unresponsive: I heard of a connection with bulging batteries in this regard but inspected it and it was fine. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Sussex Mac User Group" group.
