Thanks for your suggestions. I reset the pin code before doing the remote wipe.
I agree that my data is not particularly valuable. I'm just worried about 'vandalism' after about 100 recent emails vanished from my gmail account yesterday. The 'problem' is that as the phone is in Morocco and I'm based in France I disabled 3G roaming. Apparently without data roaming find my iPhone won't work and unless whoever has it turns on, none of the options in find my iPhone work.
