Hi Nick
If you do an archive & reinstall, preserving user and network
settings, you won't lose anything

Hi Sam,
Yes that was what I was afraid of because whatever homework she had
will be lost.
But maybe that's a good lesson in itself.
As its a G5 iMac, I am presuming it would be no later than Tiger but
she doesn't know anyway (she's 12 by the way).
I have a copy of Tiger.
Thanks,
Nick

Sounds like the OS needs reinstalling, do you have the original
disks or a retail copy of Leopard?

A friend's daughter started to play around with iTunes while
Software update was downloading/installing some files and there
was a kernel panic.
The black screen with lots of white type came up with the message
to switch off or restart but every time she does that the same
screen comes back.
She has switched it off at the wall, then held in the power button
for 30secs (as suggested by an Apple genius) and then tried
switching on again but the same screen comes back.
She also tried resetting the PRAM to no avail.
It's a PowerPC iMac (probably running Tiger or earlier). Probably
not backed up either but if anyone has any ideas how to get it up
and running again I'd appreciate it.
Many thanks, Nick
