Dont get a compact or a "hybrid" I replaced my Nikon DSLR with a Canon
Powershot sx20 thinking it would be the best of both worlds. While it isnt
a bad camera by any stretch I really regret not getting another real
camera. If I had never had an SLR camera before then it would probably be
fine but I would whole-heartely urge you towards a real camera from either
nikon or canon, as you wot be limited by its capabilities and will
potentially get many future years of enjoyment from it and all the
lenses/kit as the hobby grows.

to draw a kind of parallel it would be like buying a PC instead of a mac
just to save a few hundred, but you wont have anywhere near as much fun
using it, may not last as long, and wont have as strong a value second hand
when you want to trade-up or give up.

(unless you go for a leica m9... hmm nice)
