Hi Ray An alternative to a DSLR you might consider is a compact system camera. They have the ability to change lenses like a DSLR but are smaller, lighter and a good transition from point and shoot.
I bought a Samsung NX10 last year from Jessops - I got a great deal with 2 lenses included for £450. The model has been superceded by the NX11 but there's not a huge difference and if you can pick up the older model you will get a bargain. Its 30mm pancake lens is acknowledged to be extremely sharp and I'm thrilled with the results from mine. You might be able to pick up a deal with 2 lenses included I now have three lenses for it which cover all my needs. The Canon / Nikon brigade are no doubt sniffing loudly now but I would take a look ;-) Amazon are showing it for £359.99 with a standard lens.
