If you have the small apple square port (mini display port I believe?) and an HDMI port then you might be able to get the two screens going together
I wasn't aware HDMI could be converted down to VGA, but if the adapter exists... I use several items on my normal monitor that are converted from HDMI - PS3, apple TV 1st gen, Dell laptop. But these are going through a HDMI-DVI converter as the two standards are pretty much identical except for the arrangement of the pins and that HDMI also carries sound. Try connecting one monitor at a time to each of the two display options of the mac. If you can't get any picture from the HDMI output at all then you know it doesn't like your connector (or the monitor doesn't like the connector) If you get a picture but only from one at a time then its the mac that doesn't like driving both displays at once, but I suspect its the adapter. If your monitor only has VGA (connector with 15 pins over 3 rows in a D shape) Then it is probably too old to understand the digital signals of DVI, and HDMI, display port etc that are spin-off standards from it.
