Having looked all the way down Apple's page it does say:
AirDrop system requirements
To send items to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you need a 2012 or
newer Mac model with OS X Yosemite or later, excluding the Mac Pro (Mid 2012).
Whereas it seems that a Mac from late 2008 onwards can use AirDrop with another
Mac.
That will be why it doesn’t work between my Mid-2011 iMac and iOS …
