Thanks very much, Sam.  Last night I spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple 
support and it is now sorted (fingers crossed).  My MBP had got itself in a 
tangle and that combined with our rubbish broadband had created the problem.  
The good news is that we are changing over to fibre on Sept 7!
