I had something similar with a phone.  Although it looked ok, when I
decided to dig around in there with a paperclip (repeat at your own risk!)
I got a disgusting amount of fluff out that was a grey colour which
rendered it invisible to inspection.

Happened to mention to one of the Apple bods in the store while there about
something else and apparently invisible fluff is the most common reason
people complain to them of poorly fitting lightning connectors.
