LOL, well I am also part of a group trying to overturn the law making radar detectors illegal in Va. They are only illegal in Va and D.C. and most of the time, whether im speeding or not, if I hear my radar go off, I slow up or at least check my speed. But Va gvt feels that if you have one it tempts you to speed. But i speed whether I have one or not and having it our car has saved me hundreds of dollars in speeding tickets. Also the majority of cops in Va dont usually pull you over for having one. I got pulled over once for a burnt out tail light and the cop saw it sitting on the dash and just asked me if i knew they were illegal and I said yeah and he said ok just checking, LOL.....

The fees cover the theoretical cost of filing the motions (the guilty plea, etc) and the filing costs of the public record.  They are also punitive in nature so probably don't reflect actual cost.

The question that I have is why would he have it *in the window* when he knows they are illegal.  That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  It would be like running around Miami with a kilo of coke on your dash.

I guess they just dismiss it from your record.....Now I can see if you go to court and have it dismissed still having to pay court costs, but I always thought paying the ticket was an admission of guilt and if it's paid before the court date, then why does the judge have to even look at the case, especially if you arent required to show up at court.

I know what you mean, I've had cases dismiss the ticket but you still have to pay court cost...and wind up paying $100 or more. That always seemed wrong to me, that the ticket could be dismissed and you still wind up paying $100.....

It just seems stupid, although I know the counties get their money from those court costs, but why pay them if you arent even going.

Ahhh did you really need to post this one today. Hubby got nailed for having a radar dectector yesterday and the stupid thing wasnt even plugged in. (remember they are illegal in Va). The cop saw it in the window and didnt care it didnt even have a power supply going to it (it was at home here with me) gave him the ticket anyway. $94 for a stupid radar detector. Oh and $50 of that is court costs which I dont see why you have to pay court costs if you pay the ticket (which admits your guilt) before the court date.

Will a radar detector always warn you when you're under surveillance?

Not necessarily - A basic radar detector won't do you much good if the police officer drives up behind you and turns on the radar gun. The detector will alert you, but by that time, the officer already has all the information he or she needs. In many cases, however, detectors pick up the signal before the speeding car can be tracked. Police often leave their radar guns turned on for a long period of time, instead of activating them after sneaking up behind a car.
