Absolutely...and it has saved my bacon a couple of times over the years, once
with a retract jam and another when one pack went .
Given the relatively low failure rate of RX's, and the fact that even a full-
house 6 meter ship will not tax the PWR buss enough to cause damage, a single
RX is adequate. Two is fine, but you must make sure that they do not interact
electrically and that their antennas are routed as far apart as possible.
However adverse yaw will all but render the aircraft unflyable if you split the
control system left-to-right.
Two 5cell packs (mandatory - if you are a non-believer measure the working V at
the furthest servo), through two quality independant switches, into separate
slots on the RX is IMO mandatory if the ship is 5 meter or greater wingspan.
Two pack into a "Y" has not gained you little; essentially the same amount of
PWR is being routed through a single 22awg lead, and there is no advantage here
(maximum awg for a typical of-the-shelf OEM switches, most likely it is 24awg
though). If you have no spare RX outputs for a second pack, then plug the first
pack into the BATT terminal and use that "Y" at the opposite end of the buss
and plug the second pack into one side and whatever control output into the
other.
And (unfortunately) it seems this ALWAYS needs mentioning as there are still
some uninformed people out there who wrongly believe that two packs in parallel
will somehow bring the world to an end. This is a pile of BS.
