Has anyone here ever set up a redundant battery and switch for a scale

Yes. Simple to do. Two packs (same cell count, capacity can be different), two switches. Plug into any open RX port or use a Y if needed.

Yes. given the cost of the big scale ships I prefer to have at least two switches (my real worry). Plus you generally need the weight so why not do it with batteries.?

I'm working out my servo / rx / battery tray, and I'm torn between
duplicating everything or just using a "Y" on two batteries.

If you do this you lose true redundancy. Just plug them both into the RX and use 2 switches.

The extreme would be having two RXs, splitting the plane, either left /
right, maybe one for the wings the other for everything else. Without a
split elevator, that's probably not worth pursuing (I probably couldn't
land it if if I lost the elevator).

Waste of time and effort. Giant scale power guys are moving away from this. Most have found it to be something that really is not needed (and when asked JR will tell you NOT to do it). There are some who still swear by it, but most do not. And that environment is way more harsh than a glider.
