I am deeply impressed with Chris's idea of conduit on foam. (correct if I am wrong). If I were you I would further it into 3D solution from 2D. What I mean is that 2D refers to a ring on a planar surface, while 3D is a ring turns into a one turn helical. By that, the slot width left behind can be nearly equal to the diameter of the wire.
