If this was in fact a universally accepted practice, then why would the mfrs
bother with the added expense and complexity of modules?  Just providing
access to the crystal would be sufficient.

No, I think they do it for a reason...

I cannot understand the problem we change crystals in both the Rx and Tx
as a matter of course here in the UK with no problems what so ever. In
fact it is common at comps with a fly-off you may well have to do this
just to fly.
