So how do you set mode 5 up and how does it
actually operate?

just connect it to your receiverbatteries,
You will have variotone ,
altitude announcement as preset in mode 4,
I prefer every 10 s, and
voltage if it is sinking.
But you have to set glitch warning to off (setmode5),
because there can be none
correct pulse, if it is
just connected to batteries.
It is also possible to use
a 2-position switch, one position automatic alti announcement
and the other Vario off
(for acrobatics) .

Of course all I have to do for the
straight to battery connection is pull the signal wire from the Pic's plug,
and leave it in the Gear channel.
