I kind of have the same sediment as Mike. I am very fortunate here on Maui I am one of three licensed ham R/C pilots where I fly. But a couple years ago, I was the only ham pilot where I fly.
I'm hoping that the synthesizer transmitters will keep most people on 72 MHz and the present population of black flag pilots will be in the background with just enough support from JR, Futaba, and even Sombra Labs (I heard Sombra is coming out with a ham version of the Shadow 3). The way I see it, it's not third-party traffic, it's you being the control operator. I believe it's perfectly legal so long as you're there watching, and if someone is flying your plane then you almost certainly will be. (It IS a handy excuse to say "no you can't fly my plane" though.) I always have mixed emotions when someone asks if they should get ham gear. I think it's a great idea if you have a license, but I also don't want to spoil a good thing for those of us who already use those frequencies. Ideally I'd like to see 50 MHz gear be just popular enough to remain in production and readily available at good prices, but no more popular than that!
