Geoff,
Thank you very much for your reply. I'm not a network admin, other than my own and a couple of friends but they all want wireless now so I'm trying to convince them to do " ANYTHING" other than plug in their wireless router and brag to me how cool they think this is. Regarding my home wireless network I'm concerned that I'm not configured for best security. You gave two options for enhancing security, ttls or better crypto. I am not familiar with ttls. Using my WRG54T w/ a crossover cable off of my primary router BEFSR81. I have WEP enabled w/128 bit passphrase that I came up with. ( for what it is worth) Would you suggest not broadcasting my SSID? (I thought I needed it to identify my AP). Should I use Mac filtering?
I'm asking all this because this group has inspired me to put up a radio for outside access to the web and email. I don't want to get serious about this till I have some basic knowledge above. I live in a small town with one public hot spot. I want my own private access because I work outside and local and want 24/7 access to the web and email not my own network at this time. Maybe later.
I have been building and using computers since 1985 but I still consider myself a newbee when it comes to router management.
Thanks again for your comments and support. Network Security has been a hobby of mine for some time. I enjoy passing on all the wisdom I glean from you folks.
Namast'e
Joseph

Not a greenhorn question. can't remember ever needing to
do this exercise for wlan admin purposes. but going through
the steps and busting a key on your own box illustrates the
value of learning how to set up a ttls solution with certificate
exchange or at least switching to better crypto.

Frank,
I hope I don't sound like a complete "greenhorn" here, but I have to ask, could you give some examples where one would need to crack a WEP Key?
Locked out of a router?
I have been following this list for some time now and watched the meetings via web cast. I know there are applications for WEP key cracking but I'm so new to networking I'm not sure what they would be.
Thanks Frank,
Joe

cracking without being hindered by hardware and software bugs. The entire
attack is done with publicly available software and doesn't require special
hardware-just a few laptops and wireless cards......."
