Hi all, I'm having the same problem as this, or if not very similar.
As soon as the soekris is powered on, my power, error, and disk LEDs
all blink, and although it may be my imagination, the disk led does
appear to blink slightly faster than the other two.

I have a net4801 with a 2.5" hdd in it. I run FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE,
although I am not actually getting to the boot stage so it would seem.
When connected to the serial port either in the 9600 speed I set it
to, or the 19200 default, there is absolutely no output, not even the
POST screen with the option to drop to comBIOS.

When I remove the hard drive, the system will POST and even try and
boot from ethernet, though there isn't anything to boot from (no tftp
etc). From there I can drop to comBIOS and all settings appear to be
in order, but as soon as the hard drive is put back in, the error
occurs again.

I have tested the hard drive in my laptop, and it starts to boot
FreeBSD fine, but hangs at the loading of
/boot/defaults/loader.conf... which I assume is due to the kernel
customisation for soekris (such as the CPU_GEODE) etc not being
compatible with a pentium processor. So I therefore don't think there
is anything wrong with the laptop. The hard drive says that being
jumperless, it defaults to master, and I have tried switching the IDE
cable round a different way.

This net4801 has worked fine for 6 months, but a week or so ago it
crashed and rebooted twice, and then when I went away for the weekend,
I came back and it had seemed to have crashed and would not boot
again. There have been no recent changes to it, therefore it is
unlikely that I have changed anything that would make the soekris do
this.

Seeing as the hard drive appears to be ok, one would assume there
could be something wrong with the board? Your help would be greatly
appreciated on this subject!

Adam
