I think you may be on to something there... I didn't even realize that
the drive geometry as seen by the BIOS was displayed on boot, I guess
I missed it.

I corrected the geometry in FreeBSD to what the 5501 said and did a
reinstall.  The system still won't boot after the initial install (it
just hangs), but it no longer complains about the boot loader or
kernel being missing.  Progress... I think? :)

Thanks for all the help guys.  Not too sure where to go from here but
at least it's doing something different now.
