I don't know if it is related to your problem, but I had something 
similar happen to me when upgrading to wheezy.  The resolution was 
simple enough; I just manually re-installed grub ("grub-install 
/dev/sda"), and the problem went away.  Although maybe power-cycling or 
something else was also part of it.  Of course, you'll have to boot 
without using grub to do this, but if you already have PXE boot set up, 
then this should be simple enough.

You have probably already tried this, but sometimes the obvious does get 
overlooked, so I thought I'd mention it.
