Spammers spam by the millions. A mailing list without defenses is a
BIG payoff for them, and they collect these email addresses and
treasure them. They have bots to sign in as a list member
(automatically), send the spam, then unsubscribe, all in a matter of
seconds. The spam is sent and the spammer is unsubscribed. The
mailing list software masks the spammers true identity as the
original header of the spammers message is rewritten by the list
hosts software. So, mailing lists without defenses are easy pickins for them.

That being said, spammers don't read replies to emails for the
purposes of authenticating them...and they don't have time to
research the email lists purpose. A simple question (like what their
call is or how they use the software or what their interest in the
particular lists subject matter is) weeds out 99.99 percent of the spammers.

You don't need to ask them much.........any request for additional
info by the list owner is rejected by them, so you only need to ask
for very simple info to authenticate the user.

The hardcore spammers don't have time to deal with custom replies for
authentication purposes.
