Hi Matt
My guess is still that there's a ShaderDef generated for the shader, and
that ShaderDef is used instead of a preset (since we were able to change
the Architectural defaults by editing its Shader Param Defs).
You can still generate presets, with spdl2preset.exe in Application\bin,
or from the Plugin Manager.

When we branched our 7.5 code to test newer versions, we discovered
that when installing shaders via xsibatch.exe --i doesn't generate a
.preset file anymore as of Softimage 2011. If are any shader .presets
remain in use it means one of two things: the code hasn't been
touched in a long time, or something is being used internally to
generate those presets that aren't available to end users.

From Softimage 2013 SP1
ApplyShader("$XSI_DSPRESETS\\Shaders\\Material\\mental
images\\mia_Material.Preset", "", "Architectural", "",
siLetLocalMaterialsOverlap);
I admit I quickly scanned your message, and when I saw "presets no
longer used", I thought you were referring to non-spdl based shaders
