That's a good suggestion. Ifound one of the Ultra SCSI StorEdge Unipack w/ 9GB drive here at the office. The trick now will be to remove the drive from the Unipack and replace it with the HD that I took out of the Ultra 2. According to the labels in the Unipack the drive is supposed to be replaceable by the end user. Do you know how I'd do that? There are some unusual screws that have tiny six-pointed stars. I think I'll have to find a tool to remove them?

I'm no longer at work so don't have one in front of me, but iirc you need a philips screwdriver to remove the screw at the back end, inside the small, open brown square. Once that's gone, press on the two tabs on the sides and towards the back of the case and pull upwards and towards the front, and the top (the whole beige part) should come off. Inside, the drive is removed by pulling down on the center tab underneath the case, the pulling the drive + metal chasis towards the front. I'm not sure what kind of screws hold the drive in the chasis, they may be star shaped, i think there are only four.

that works: all i needed was the hint about pulling out/down on the tab and then pulling the drive+chassis toward the front. thanks.

The Ultra 2 HD is fastened into a carrier/chassis of its own; that's what I would have needed the six-pointed-star screw driver for. The drive in the Unipack was secured by four phillips screws that were easily loosened. Since I'm only connecting the Ultra 2 HD temporarily into the Unipack, I don't actually need to remove it from the carrier. The small difference in elevation/height (approx. 1/8") between the HD and the Unipack connectors can be adjusted temporarily while the data is transferred. As long as we don't have an earthquake or someone bumps into it, there should be no problem.

There's probably a Sun Doc outlining all the above with pictures too...
