A G-8 summit called for this weekend (Saturday) is expected to put
focus on food insecurity in Africa.

The G-8 summit, which is a meeting of the world's eight most developed
Nations; France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Canada, Japan, the US and
Russia, will be held at U.S President Barack Obama's retreat in Camp
David, near Washington.

Obama is expected to announce a plan of USD3 billion to go towards
farm productivity on the African continent. The money will be raised
from American private companies that will invest in Africa.

The head of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Rajiv
Shah says it is hoped the initiative will move 50 million people out
of the condition of poverty and hunger.

Four African presidents; Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, Current
chairperson of the African Union Yayi Boni, Ethiopia's Prime Minister
Meles Zenawi, and Atta Mills of Ghana will attend the summit.

A statement by White House spokesman Jay Carney says the African
leaders will be part of a session to discuss food insecurity.

The leaders have in the past been lauded for their initiatives in
dealing with food insecurity in their countries. Kikwete's invitation
follows the launch of the "Kilimo Kwanza" strategy, the Agricultural
Sector Development Programme and the Southern Agricultural Growth
Corridor of Tanzania.

Atta's invitation is to shed more light on the Ghana Agriculture
Commercial Programme aimed at bridging the gaps between small, nucleus
and out grower farmers.

President Yayi Boni of Benin is attending in his capacity as current
Chairperson of the African Union. The African leaders are expected to
make a strong case to the G8 to expand their assistance for food
production in Africa.
