The UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres has expressed
alarm at new inflows of refugees from the Democratic of Congo (DRC)
fleeing into Rwanda and Uganda.

The refugees are fleeing fighting between militants in the eastern DRC.

The violence has affected the areas of South and North Kivu of DRC for
several years.

The situation has worsened in recent months amid resurgence of
fighting between government forces and soldiers loyal to former rebel
commander Bosco Ntaganda.

Guterres said in a statement released in Geneva on Wednesday that "the
displacement level in eastern DRC is already disastrous."

He added that the conflict there, coupled with very limited access for
humanitarian workers, means that many thousands of people are without
help and protection.
