I believe what Stephano is trying to describe is a transparent SMTP
proxy for inbound mail.
 

Yep, something like ASSP. Though, I am not sure that that gives you 
anything that SpamAssasin can't give you. ASSP will scan for spam, but I 
am not sure about virii. I guess the point is, what does using a 
transparent SMTP save you?
