Hello everyone,
I am forwarding to this list some information about a strange
behaviour that I am seeing with a SS20 under SparcLinux. Basically, this
is what is going on:
A SS20 sees 320mb and 192mb of RAM just fine but with a 256MB
configuration, Linux only sees 200MB (yes, 205000k) whereas Solaris sees
256MB. The SIMMS have been changed, the memory slots tried alternatively
but with 8*32mb I still get 200mb under RH5.1, RH5.2 and 2.2.5 from
UltraPenguin-1.1.9. Any idea what's going on?
I'm including the technical details below.

Subject: Missing memory on SS20?
Hello everyone,
I've noticed a strange behaviour. A SparcStation 20 was upgraded
from 192MB to 256MB at a friend's office. Amazingly, the PROM tests report
the memory is fine, Solaris sees all 256Mb ram but under RH5.1 the machine
sees this:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 205352 18696 186656 14800 1860 9556
-/+ buffers/cache: 7280 198072
Swap: 130684 0 130684

Hello everyone,
here is more information. This really is a weird problem:
In a SS20, the memory SIMM slots look like this:
J0201 SIMM0
J0202 SIMM2
J0203 SIMM5
J0301 SIMM3
J0302 SIMM6
J0303 SIMM1
J0304 SIMM7 J0407 VSIMM0
J0305 SIMM4 J0406 VSIMM1
The machine was working fine at 192MB with this config:
32 MB SIMM0
32 MB SIMM2
32 MB SIMM5
32 MB SIMM3
32 MB SIMM6
32 MB SIMM1
----- SIMM7 ----- VSIMM0
----- SIMM4 ----- VSIMM1
This config gives:
Apr 15 21:17:11 thorbardin kernel: Memory: 189704k available (1044k kernel
code, 5108k data) [f0000000,fc000000]
Also the machine is reported to have worked fine before at 320MB with this
config:
32 MB SIMM0
64 MB SIMM2
64 MB SIMM5
64 MB SIMM3
64 MB SIMM6
32 MB SIMM1
----- SIMM7 ----- VSIMM0
----- SIMM4 ----- VSIMM1
This gave:
Feb 27 02:21:00 thorbardin kernel: Memory: 318732k available (1044k kernel
code, 7156k data) [e9000000,fd000000]
But when we try:
32 MB SIMM0
32 MB SIMM2
32 MB SIMM5
32 MB SIMM3
32 MB SIMM6
32 MB SIMM1
32 MB SIMM7 ----- VSIMM0
32 MB SIMM4 ----- VSIMM1
We get:
Apr 16 18:11:43 thorbardin kernel: Memory: 205304k available (1044k kernel
code, 6644k data) [ed000000,fd000000]
I was thinking something was wrong with the hardware so I tried these
configs:
32 MB SIMM0 32 MB SIMM0
32 MB SIMM2 32 MB SIMM2
32 MB SIMM5 ----- SIMM5
32 MB SIMM3 32 MB SIMM3
----- SIMM6 32 MB SIMM6
32 MB SIMM1 32 MB SIMM1
----- SIMM7 ----- VSIMM0 32 MB SIMM7 ----- VSIMM0
32 MB SIMM4 ----- VSIMM1 ----- SIMM4 ----- VSIMM1
Both configs gave a perfect 192MB:
Apr 15 21:17:11 thorbardin kernel: Memory: 189704k available (1044k kernel
code, 5108k data)
So I guess the memory connectors on the last two slots are fine. Also, All
SIMMS in the machine are SUN memory.
Also, I tried netbooting the tftpboot.img from RH5.2 (this machine is a
RH5.1 + patches) and the result was still 205304k.

Hi Peter,
Here is the result. 2.2.5 also sees 200MB ram. I had to write down
and paste by hand the "Testing 16 megs of memory" lines but I think they
are correct. Thanks,
Vincent
