As far I have seen so far on my Ultra5, there is no problem with
pppd 2.3.5 / chat from pppd 2.3.7 / kernel 2.2.10:

With STAC compression on a dialup 64kb ISDN line when ftp-ing from a
site in the UK to NL:

102400 bytes received in 2.44 secs (41 Kbytes/sec)
The only thing that probably stays bored is the SAB82532 inside the
Ultra5.
