It's actually possible to solder a new battery on to the old
EPROM.
I've done it and it works quite well. That is also
covered in the FAQ at
I had the "battery" store spot-weld tabs onto the appropriate
battery,
hot-glued it to the old EPROM, followed the directions in the
FAQ,
reprogrammed the EPROM per the FAQ and all was well. If
you still
know the MAC (Ethernet) address, write it down so you can
use it
when you reprogram the EPROM.

Looks to me like the NVRAM is expired.
You can check this if the MAC address reported at system
boot-time is nonsense....
If it has then you need to source a new one and then program
it.
All explained in the FAQ.
Also
I would suggest you try to get or borrow a puckker SUN/Sony CDRom
drive.
I tried installing RedHat using a Plextor x32 CDRom and it
didn't work.
I
tried again with the real SUN CDRom and all worked
fine......
Wierd. The Plextor Drives are normally very good and *very*
compatible.

I am using Red Hat's Linux 6.0 Sparc Core
software. The hardware is a Sun SparcStation 2 with 64MB memory, ROM
rev 2.6, floppy, 4 GB SCSI disk drive, and an external SCSI box with a
Creative Labs CD in it. I have built the floppy several times with
different images offered on the distribution CD. All efforts yield the
following results.
While trying to boot with the command:
ok boot floppy
I get the following results:
Boot Device: /fd file and
args:
SILOboot:
Uncompressing image...
IDPROM: Unknown format type!
Program Terminated
ok
This is my first time to work with Suns and my
problems are likely operator error or perhaps old hardware problems.
The hardware self-test seem ok, but what do I know? If anyone has any
recommendations, I would be appreciative. Thanks, Terry...
