Greetings! I have just obtained my new Speedtouch USB modem. My ASDL line has not yet been activated, but I decided to hook the modem up to the computer and see if they'll talk to each other.
I've carefully followed the HOWTO. I recompiled the kernel (linux 2.4.17) with the recommended options, and ensured that the specified modules are all loaded with modprobe, and show up on the lsmod list. The usb file system is mounted and shows up. When I plug in the modem, I get initial LED activities, and after a few moments the left hand light stays green, the right one flashes green, with an occasional red flash. When I run modem_run, I get the following output: --------------------------------------------------------------- [root@tiger root]# modem_run -v 2 -m -f /store/download/mgmt.o Gotcha, I found your ADSL ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB modem! best offset 6463 with probability 87% best offset 532634 with probability 100% BLOCK1: Connection timed out Uploading /store/download/mgmt.o failed! Continuing anyway ... Reference : 3EC 18607CAAB 05(see under your modem box) modem_start_synchro:00 00 .. === modem state at Thu Mar 7 16:28:38 2002 === c0 12 0007 : 08 . <snip> -------------------------------------------------------------- The modem then keeps retrying the syncro steps, but since it's not connected to the line, I'm not all that disappointed that it doesn't work :-) My question, however is this: I'd have thought that uploading the microcode shouldn't depend on an ADSL carrier, as it's an initialization step, and it should work. I'm therefore concerned by the "Uploading /store/download/mgmt.o failed!" line. Am I right in thinking this should work with or without an ADSL carrier signal? If so, what could be causing this failure? (BTW, the modem _does_ show up in /proc/bus/usb/devices, so the system does know it's there). Any suggestions would be appreciated. __ Dr. Ken de Veaux | EMAIL : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se dsinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe
