I considered this, but I'm building up a bare frame, so there's no weight to 
speak of. In that same thread though, there are detailed instructions for 
building a compressor, which I think I'll try.

The front of your car itself will do the job.  I heard of it and tried
it.  Works quite well.  There's a discussion about doing it here on this
linked thread.
