FM gives a design for installing control mode fire sprinkler under open grate catwalks in buildings protected by an ESFR system. However I can no find anything in NFPA, NFPA 13 2007 8.12.5.3.3 (Section 8.12 addresses ESFR sprinklers) states "That sprinklers installed under open gratings shall be of the intermediate level/rack storage type or otherwise shielded from the discharge of the overhead sprinklers." It does not give you a design for the sprinklers under the catwalks. NFPA 13 2007 16.2.3.5 states "Where ESFR sprinklers are installed above and below obstructions, the discharge for up to two sprinklers for one of the levels shall be included with those of the other level in the hydraulic calculations." That is if ESFR sprinklers are installed. If control mode sprinklers are installed per 8.12.5.3.3., what is the design requirements? None are stated. Do sprinklers have to be added in or due to being control mode, none are require to be added to calcs? Or am I just missing the info in the book?
