Coincidently, we just started putting just a "dot" of anaerobic dope on the
teflon on a few plastic jobs because we were getting some drips on the
concealed heads (p.o.s. socket they give you, better with an impact socket)
and it's working fine but I've always been cautious about using dope around
heads, especially anaerobics. They can seal a head as well as a thread. I
don't use any of the traditional dopes anymore, haven't for years. I was
hooked on permabond but at $50 a 2/3 filled quart (some metric equivalent),
it was ex$pensive. I love superdope, better consistency and doesn't dry out
on the brush as fast.
There are some medium and high density tapes out there and colored that work
pretty well, less wraps and a more durable seal but I haven't tried them on
heads yet.
I will say on dissimilar metals, especially steel into brass or bronze; dope
over tape every time. Always have and always will. It's a little cleaner
on an exposed piece, like a FDV to dope and tape over the dope.
Other than that, we just use a dab of anaerobic dope while the pipes turning
and make on the fitting.

On plastic jobs, I instruct my fitters to just use teflon tape on the
sprinkler heads.
On steel pipe jobs, we tape and dope everything.

I worked on power plants for years, and we used anerobic pipe dope without
teflon tape quite successfully.
