As a general rule of thumb, quick response sprinklers, which use a fast
response thermal element, operate approximately 4 to 5 times faster than a
standard response sprinkler when tested in the plunge test apparatus. It is
important to keep in mind that RTI is a laboratory value, obtained under
specific conditions, i.e., constant temperature and velocity, whether link is
facing upstream or downstream, within the plunge test apparatus, and has no
influence in NFPA 13 design criteria other than to identify whether a sprinkler
is standard or fast response (residential, quick response, and ESFR).

NIST ran a number of full scale fire tests in hospital patient rooms
looking at different sprinkler heads, locations, activation times, etc.

The report is located here:

Subject: RTI Times

We have a customer, a VA Hospital, that is trying to justify changing
from
Standard response to quick response sprinklers. We have discussed the
RTI
and other factors that make the QR's respond faster, but he is asking if
we
know of any time differences that are verifiable. What he needs is some
idea that QR's respond in X seconds and Standard response respond in Y
seconds to show the difference. I have looked in the sprinkler
handbooks
( 1999 to 2007) and the Fire Protection Handbook, but only find
references
to RTI, no actual times. The FM standard lists 1:15 as the time for QR,
but
I could not find standard response.
   Any help is appreciated.
