Todd,
With your situation, we have almost always omitted the sprinkler. Most of
the AHJ's that we have dealt with are able to reason that the practicality
and functionality of this sprinkler are negligible, and therefore allow its
omission. When we have been forced into providing a sprinkler, a concealed
sprinkler has been installed. With the tracks that I have seen, there is
just enough room between the top of door and the top of the track (ceiling)
to allow the folding partition to be extended or retracted without the cover
plate of the concealed sprinkler to be affected.

Subject: folding door alcove

A question came up on a hotel with a meeting room that could be
divided in two by a folding partition. The partition folds into a
space roughly the size of a closet. The ceiling of this space is
mostly track that partition runs on. Does this space need to be
sprinklered? If so, does anyone have any good ideas how to do it?
