In my opinion this is a really bad idea. Been there and done that and
the dry system is the better choice here by far. If I were you I would
sit down with them and educate them on all of the issues that you have
just addressed with the antifreeze and I WOULD definitely tell them of
the approximate replacement cost. What does the antifreeze have to do
with if it was 13 or 13R? What is the water source if the underground is
to be filled w/ af. Remember this must be glycerin if it is going to be
cpvc. Was the 10 yr old system galvanized?

Subject: Unusual Situation

Hello sprinklerforum,

I am open to suggestions on this one.

We have a customer in a 4 story residential building wanting to
replace the entire system due to rusted/leaking pipes in the old system.

They are requiring the system to be installed with CPVC piping.

They are requiring the ENTIRE system to be filled with
Anti-Freeze including the underground.

They are wanting to put the DCDA Backflow, Then the Alarm Valve,
Then the RPZ Backflow and Expansion Tank into a hotbox outside.

To me it looks like the use of Anti-Freeze bumps it to a 13
system instead of 13R. The new piping is to be built into new soffits on
the outside of the building walkways. They have a Dry Pipe system now
and do not want the leaking problems they have now to recur in a few
years like the existing 10 year old system. I am not even bring up the
subject of Anti-Freeze recovery/reuse when the system is tested or when
the Alarm company does a flow to test the WF switches quarterly. The
Main Drain flow test is another subject...
