A local bank allows kids to run fundraisers in their parking lot on
weekends, washing cars.

When the sun is beating down like today (Ron, I feel your pain and wish the
convention was in Dec or ND) the kids might move under the porte cochere.

How badge-heavy would a code official be to stop on his day off and run 'em
out into the blazing sun?

Oh, final irony- the local bank is, of course, unsprinklered. But what's in
there to burn?

And in stepping back to the big picture, why require parked cars
(overnight)under a porte cochere to be sprinklered above when a multi-story
parking garage with x% openings doesn't need sprinklers in many cases?

We're installing sprinklers under the noncombustible overhangs at a couple
fancy car dealerships since they will have cars on display there, although
the area is marked "new car delivery" on the plans. Since their low end cars
start in the $40's, maybe it's the price of inventory, not code compliance,
that drove the dealer and code official to agree on the need to provide dry
systems in these small areas (<20 heads each). I don't want to find out what
dripping AF does to German paint.

Correct, and its no longer a car wash either. There are times when we
need to look at the big picture and determine if the proposed occupancy,
operation and hazard fits within the boundaries of a code or standard.
If it doesn't and some component or circumstance presents an issue that
is out of bounds then we need to look at our fire protection objectives.

This is just such a situation where the AHJ needs to get involved.
