Actually, the deal was the wood. A combustible surface. FR wood wasn't pretty
enough. My thoughts were the wood is glued or nailed to a drywall surface.
Drywall was noncombustible, the space above the drywall was concrete, metal
lath and metal studs which is a noncombustible space. I would think that even
with a B-tank (torch) you couldn't start the stuff on fire very easily. If it
did start on fire, wouldn't the heat be coming from the floor and wouldn't the
sprinklers extinguish the fire below?? I give up.

We fit all the criteria re ceiling pockets to eliminate the sprinklers on a
condo project except the local AHJ decided the wood glued to the drywall
ceiling in the pocket created a combustible space which required sprinklers.
Only meant an additional 20 or so sprinklers in an elevator lobby corridor
so that we might protect the decorative ceiling with the pendent sprinklers.
I want to retire.

Ed, A new guy here put a sprinkler in each skylight and I challenged him on
why. He pointed to 8.6.7 and asked if they could be omitted where it said
that. Damned if I could find anything in 13.
