I'n not sure. The heat will start collecting in the space between the
purlins. Then flow through the 10" space above the joists (assuming the
purlins are 10" deep)and maybe even across the purlins, depending on the
depth and momentum. If classified as obstructed construction, then the
deflector can be upto 16" below the deck (for this example). Is that okay?

If the beam/purlin construction is obstructed construction, shouldn't there
be a minimum depth before it is termed such. Take the case of wood bar joist
construction. The wood top chord can be any depth, but classified as
unobstructed construction. The purlins can be the same depth, and further
apart (than the wood bar joists), and still be classified obstructed
construction?

Subject: Re: ceiling heights

The definition refers to BOTH issues.

If you think about for a second, I suspect you'll change your position on
ceilings. It's the lower ceiling that will have the higher propensity for
rolling over the obstruction (like Katrina or any other female when laying
down the law - of physics or anything else). The evaluation for ceiling
pockets highlighted that momentum plays such a key role in initial
activation/ heat flow. The higher ceiling will have lower velocities
