Mike You can find protection information on mobile shelving units in the following documents:
1. Fire Protection Study, Mobile Compact Shelving Fire Tests, "Archives II", Gage-Babcock & Associates, Dated June 1990. 2. Full Scale Fire Tests of Sprinklered Mobile Shelving Units for National Library of Canada, Gage-Babcock & Associates, Dated May 1992. 3. Full-Scale Fire Tests and the Development of Design Criteria for Sprinkler Protection of Mobile Shelving Units, G.D. Lougheed, J.R. Mawhinney, and J. O'Neill, Fire Technology, First Quarter 1994, Volume 30, Number 1, pp.'s. 98 - 133. If you client is an FM insured you should call the Local FM Field Engineer because FM has protection recommendations for this type of storage. Protection of these units is not just a "sprinkler" thing but involves building fire resistance rating of storage room and configuration of the mobile shelving units at rest or when parked. Our recommendations to clients with this type of storage are as follows: 1. Provide a mechanical means to maintain at all times a minimum 6-inch space between each shelving unit. 2. The compartment containing the rolling aisle storage shall be cut off from the remainder of the facility with two hour fire rated barrier (ceiling, floor and walls), with openings protected by 1½ hour, Class B, fire rated protective devices. 3. Design the sprinkler system to provide a design density of 0.30 gpm per sq. ft. over the hydraulically most remote 3,000 sq. ft. 4. Sprinkler head spacing shall not exceed 100 sq. ft. per head. 5. The sprinklers shall be QR type, pendent style, ½ inch orifice, ½ inch NPT sprinklers, with a K factor of 5.6. If the 6 inch space is not provided then the sprinkler system will not control the fire; protection for this type of storage is not just a "sprinkler" thing but is the synergy of spacing between the units, Fire resistive compartment containment and heavy sprinkler discharge density. Mike I hope this helps. There is a 2 foot clearance between the deflectors and top of the shelving.
