The last pump we did seismic on was a packaged pump house by ITT. The pump
was supplied by a tank located along side of the pump house. Since the tank
was on a separate foundation from the pump house, the two foundations could
move differentially. We installed seismic separation's by Meteflex on both
the suction and relief lines that connected the pumphouse and tank. We also
installed flex couplings at the discharge line since it too could move
differentially from the pump house. This system served yard hydrants, and
future fire sprinkler systems, at a waste disposal and sorting facility.

Subject: RE: Seismic and fire pumps
Thanks, for the input. There are a lot of confused individuals involved
in this little project right now with varying opinions. I have to be
able to substantiate the correct position concerning this issue so
everyone feels warm and fuzzy when we're done. So far none of the
applicable fire related codes really gives you any wording worth the ink
used to print it. I've been steered to other resources but they are for
process or other type of equipment that have nothing to do with our fire
protection systems.
Right now it appears that proper anchoring of the pump skid to the pad
with flexible couplings isolating the pump from the piping system seems
to be the direction implied.
More calls and questions are being asked of the vendor and others
involved as well.
I just love ambiguity....................

Craig,
I may be off-base here but I would think that the burden of compliance
would be on the manufacturer of the pump skid or package. This should
be part of their work or package.
Although, if you are the EoR, I guess you need to know what is correct
so that you can be sure their stuff is in compliance. So, forget what I
said!

Subject: RE: Seismic and fire pumps
Here's the scenario, you are directed to design and install a skid
mounted, diesel fire pump package in conformance to IBC and ASCE 7, NFPA
13 and/or NFPA 20, for a seismic Site Class "C" and are directed that
this is a "life Safety" system so an importance factor of 1.5 applies.
So do you take any special steps with the setting of the pump?
Vibration isolation, snubbers, or different anchoring methods?
If the pump set is installed rigid and is isolated from the piping via
flexible couplings is there an issue at all?

I have seen the pictures of the skids, never messed with one. Maybe the
answer is there and we do not want to say it. The bracing must still
meet the requirements. Same with a standard building, if the structure
will not support the load, it must be modified.
