The reason this issue was addressed is that the prior edition simply said Buildings With an Unprotected Concealed Space shall have a 3000 sf Remote Area. So if you have a 12 story building with ONE such space only on the first floor, the 12th floor still had to have a 3000 sf remote area.

It was changed to say adjacent. It doesn't say HORIZONTALLY so it includes the floor above.

The issue of the office within a warehouse was not discussed (and guessing where a group of 30 votes will land is often an exercise in futility) but I would think it is still applicable. Keep in mind that the area above the office is at a lower density than the rest of the warehouse (except for the 15 ft overlap)

Subject: 3000 sq. ft. design area

This subject started from another thread but it brings up some situations that exist that have always baffled me. For one, 13 states that the 3000 s.f. is applied to the sprinkler system or portions of the sprinkler system adjacent to the unsprinklered concealed area. The floor (and system on that floor) above a level that has unsprinklered combustible concealed spaces is
“adjacent” so why wouldn’t the 3000 s.f. also be required on the level
above? As a matter of fact, as was stated earlier, the fire is above the
sprinklers on the lower level. Not all buildings have fire rated floor
systems. It is quite common ,as in stick built wood frame condos and
apartments to name a few, to have non rated sub-floors on non rated floor
framing.

For another, what about a lone 2500 sq. ft. wood framed office/tool
room/restrooms structure with unsprinklered combustible concealed space, sorta like an ‘island” in a manufacturing building which is designed with a
1500 sq. ft. remote are? Should the system at the roof deck above this
“island structure” be designed to 3000 s.f.? Now the roof design is
inadequate unless there was a huge safety margin in its original design.

Just a thought that’s been bugging me.
