Subject: RE: Help!! Sprinkler in Planetarium

It would seem out of place for the fire department or AHJ to take design
authority over a project unless they are willing to stamp drawings and be
totally responsible for that design. It would be appropriate for them to make
suggestions and recommendations like an Underwriter would but not perform
engineering services unless they are licensed and contracted to do so.

In almost every case the engineer of record (or in some instances a licensed
contractor) is responsible for making design decisions including determining
the K-factor and other criteria.

If I had questions regarding the proper or suitable application of a sprinkler
head I would contact a few sprinkler manufacturers first. They've got testing
data and can tell you a whole lot more of how something is supposed to perform
under various conditions and what style or K-factor or whatever is most
suitable for your application.

No disrespect to any fire officials but when it comes to the engineering and
intent of application of a product they're not where I'd start my hunt. They
are often on the list for consultation of concepts and have been very helpful
many times when it comes to design considerations and physical constraints and
access issues.

Maybe if Firemen ran the government like on the Nextel? commercial, life would
be better, I don't know....................

First, To my knowledge 13 doesn't put a limit on ceiling heights, so the 50' or
25' or 75' doesn't hold water. (pun intended) Second, We are talking about a
planetarium not a stadium, two different animals.
Third, I'm not a Fire Department, We don't fight fires. Most of my state is
made of volunteer FF's. Would I want a volunteer FF telling me how to protect a
building? NO. That is a job for an engineer.

First of all, the AHJ has consideration to all the codes so why the insult?
They also govern how that bldg is going to be protected, they're the ones going
to fight the fire so you start with them, there hasn't been much testing over
50' high so who else would you talk to . We ended up with oscillating water
canons and 8.0 k-factor heads- show me that in the code book...........Best to
start with them and see how they want to approach it.
Maybe it is a little different back east, here the authorities have a lot to
say about how to approach a project that doesn't fit the code book, normally
that conversation would take place prior to even bidding the job.

"Start with checking with the AHJ & see what k-factor they require"

Why in the hell would an AHJ be giving a k-factor????? Does this even make
sense?
I would tell you to provide coverage per the code, and if it is not in black
and white in the code, then have an engineer tell me what/how you are going to
protect it.

George, I did an omni max dome a few years back so I know what you are up
against. Start with checking with the AHJ & see what k-factor they require for
a 60' high ceiling, thats the first problem. One way or another you have to
cover all the floor area, if that can be done with heads only above the screen
then you're in business.
