Re. reply to first question:

Yes, but aren't both figures the same. Doesn't show you when to measure up
to the glass. Both figures shown don't create additional floor space. I
think the second figure is not correct. The figures are courtsey of NFSA.
Can someone from NFSA comment?

Tony

The top two fig. measure the head spacing to the "WALL" the lower two Fig's
measure the head spacing to the "Window Glass" for bay windows that create
floor space.

Your example does not create floor space so you measure to the wall. The
concealed combustible space under the window should be filled with non-
combustible insulation, to avoid having to provide sprinkler protection in
this area.(8.15.1.2.7) The 160FT3 you refer to is for ceilings of
combustible construction above dry wall. (8.15.1.2.6 or 8.15.1.2.8)

NFPA 13, 2007; section 8.5.3.2.4

Exhibit 8.8 shows two diagrams. One for "no floor area" and the other "with
floor area".

Both diagrams appear to be the same. Am I drunk or is one diagram incorrect?

Another question. A school with classrooms having bay windows, similar to
exhibit 8.8, except there is a combustible concealed space forming part of
the wall below the window.

This concealed space is 12 feet long 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. The Fire
Marshall is asking for sprinklers in this combustible concealed space. My
thoughts are it is less than 160 cubic feet, so should not need sprinklers.
However, I don't see a code section relating specifically to this situation.
Any comments?
